This qualification represents the competencies relevant to people working in the aquaculture sector of the seafood industry at a management level.

The qualification will have application for people working:

·on aquaculture farms or fishout/put-and-take operations

·in hatcheries and nurseries

·in live post-harvest holding facilities, such as processing plants, wholesalers or transporters

·in pet shops, public aquaria, zoos or other facilities with aquatic animals

·for companies providing contract specialist services for aquaculture operations

·for companies providing consultancy, advisory, equipment sales or other services.

A person operating at this level will have a wide range of technical skills and/or managerial, coordination and planning responsibilities which may include:

·complying with a wide range of local, state, territory and federal government regulations and restrictions, including human resources, aquaculture operations, occupational health and safety (OHS), environment, animal welfare and food safety

·designing and planning culture and holding systems and other structures

·developing policies and procedures ensuring continual improvement throughout the business

·implementing new technologies and ideas

·managing risk and implementation of effective controls and corrective actions

·managing the production system

·sourcing external contractors and services.

This course is for those wanting to rise through the ranks and become leading hands and supervisors within the aquaculture industry responsible for decision making and coordinating some team activities such as feeding, construction, managing live feeds and overseeing water quality monitoring.

You will also gain knowledge and skills in:

This qualification is the crucial first step towards an exciting career in aquaculture. This course provides students with a range of core skills and knowledge relevant to working in the aquaculture industry. Graduates go on to further studies or working in a range on environments including onshore aquaculture facilities, offshore culture facilities and the ornamental fish industry.

Gain the following skills and knowledge:

·Handling and harvesting stock,

·Preparing stock for live transport,

·Monitoring stock and environmental conditions,

·Producing algal cultures, and

·Working effectively in the seafood industry

Aquaculture is a fast-growing industry. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) issued a report in 2018 stating that ‘aquaculture is fastest growing food production sector worldwide’. Typical entry-level jobs for those holding Certi?cate II include:

Fremantle campus features extensive salt and freshwater aquaculture facilities, and experienced staff.This offers plenty of relevant hands-on opportunities. Our staff have involved students in the culture and applied research projects of many marine and freshwater organisms over the last two decades including species such as abalone, dhufish, yellowtail kingfish, marron and barramundi.
